Dodgers | Kershaw to begin pitching in relief to limit innings Fri, 2 May 2008 08:39:52 -0700
The Press-Enterprise's Diamond Leung reports Los Angeles Dodgers prospect SP Clayton Kershaw will start pitching in the bullpen in the minors in order to limit his innings.
Here's the actual quote from Diamond Leung:
Protecting Kershaw
Colletti returned from his trip to the Dominican Republic and went straight to watch Class AA Jacksonville, where James McDonald started Thursday and top prospect Clayton Kershaw is scheduled to pitch today.
Kershaw, 20, who is expected to make his major league debut at some point this season after an impressive spring, will start pitching out of the bullpen in order to limit his innings, Manager Joe Torre said.
Kershaw is 0-3 in five starts but has a 1.40 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 25 2/3 innings.
More about this from MLB.com:
With general manager Ned Colletti watching, 20-year-old phenom Clayton Kershaw allowed one unearned run over 6 2/3 innings Friday night for Double-A Jacksonville, but drew a no-decision and remains winless. He allowed six hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Kershaw is having his innings limited to 25 per month so he has something left to help the Major League club later in the year. His ERA is 1.11

Seems like the info about Kershaw being called up on May 17th is just speculative. It was mentioned in the Dodgers-Rockies wrap-up on MLB.com.
Loaiza was charged with five runs in 2 1/3 innings. The Dodgers won't need a fifth starter again until May 17 and by that time, it could be Clayton Kershaw, for all the anticipation surrounding that 20-year-old.

wondering what your P circumstances were before you snagged him....also want to know if he's worth a mad rush to the wire?? reason i ask is, i have the #2 waiver pick and i'm good on pitching so far -- felix, wang, harang, verlander (ouch so far), cliff lee, greinke -- but if we're looking at someone who might help with K's/ERA/WHIP and maybe a few wins rest of season, i suppose you can never have too much good pitching, could open up my roster for a trade to help at another position.
so, is kershaw worth a scherzer-like mad dash, or are there any otehr potential call-ups (whether it's pitching or otherwise) who might be worth more: e.g. headley, fields, homer bailey, ian stewart, jay bruce.....
