so many players mature and decline at different times. bottom line: it is impossible to say with any certainty when a player will peak or decline. if we could do that, i'd follow the path that Pete Rose tread
That is true, within reason. Your body doesn't naturally decline substantially enough for that kind of drop off at age 29. If a 19-year old kid is having a bad year we can't speculate that maybe his body just declined earlier than most. Something else happened. Yes he's a big guy, but at 29 NFL running backs aren't declining yet and they take arguably the biggest full-body beatings in pro sports.
Yes there are guys that just "lose it" so it's not a given that he juiced by any means, but age isn't a part of this discussion unless there's some rare medical issue or he introduced something foreign into his body. He went from stud to crap instantly and aging just doesn't happen like that at age 29. Ever. Even before medicine was as good as it is now.

To take up such a valuable DH spot with someone who really isn't good anymore seems like the Seattle way of doing things.
Apparently that point is now.
I would feel confident dropping Hafner in standard 12 team 5x5 mixed leagues.

I hate the guy and I don't think I'd go that far....
Sorry, meant standard 12 team 5x5 mixed leagues. I corrected my post.
What exactly are you holding on hope for? At best he is a low average, no speed, 25 HR hitter which are freely available on many WWs (I just picked up Nick Johnson today, not for Hafner though - I don't own him). At worst he is not even going to get playing time, or very minimum playing time anyway.

I don't think I can drop him yet but he has been on bench for a while. He went from batting 3rd to 6th to 0. I am in 1B hell. I Pronk and Konerko, 6 people on my team are currently hitting 50+ points below their career avg.

I just traded *for* Hafner. Traded Kotchman for Hafner straight up in a 14 team mixed redraft league.
Purely a speculative pick, but I don't mind a good ol' fashioned sell high buy low. I picked Kotchman off the Waiver Wire at the beginning of the season so .
