So Woods just blew his 3rd save. At what point do the Cubs start looking to Marmol for help? The guys been stellar all year. I'm crossing my fingers, especially after my drafting of Fuentes recently paid off.
Marmol came in during the most important part of the game, runners on the corners 1 out, and sturkc both batters out in the inning. The better pitcher shouldn't always be the closer, I believe this is the case here. Marmol can go more than 1 inning and get the biggest outs of the game, while Wood can only go 1 inning and is better suited to come in with no runners on base.
Absolutely filthy. He just made the Brewers look silly today. He would be a dominant closer. But, if I'm Chicago, I'm not in any rush to move him from his current role, I'm crossing every finger and toe I have hoping that Wood turns out alright. Marmol is so valuable in that 7th/8th inning role where he can throw a couple dominant innings to bridge it over to the 9th. If Marmol doesn't pitch the 7th (runners on the corners, 1 out), it's possible the save situation doesn't even get to Wood for him to blow. He escaped Zambrano's jam in the 7th, and then went right through the Brewers 3-4-5-6 hitters in the 8th (a Hart bunt single was all the he surrendered). He handed a save on a silver platter to Wood -- 9th inning, 2 run lead, and Counsell/Kapler/Kendall due up. I just don't know if you can take him out of that role.
He threw about 5 strikes over 2 innings(the ump had no idea what to call a strike and was all over the place), I think the Brewers would have been much better off just not swinging and taking a few walks.
I agree that Marmol is too valuable to be the closer. He can go two innings and you'd rather have him pitch against the heart of the order every time or to get other pitchers out of jams.
The Cubbies will give every opportunity to Wood to keep the closer job. He'll have to blow a lot of saves -- or get hurt -- for Marmol to get the job. Which is too bad for me, as I have Marmol and he's valuable just with his Ks, ratios, and the occasional vulture win and save. If he became the closer and added 25+ saves to his line? Wow.
I am the Master. Don't question the Master. Just do what he says and be proud.
Its pretty insane how Hill has pitches 2 games and basically becomes the 5th starter and starts get skipped yet he is fine with the way wood is pitching. Lou is an awful manager

Apples and oranges.
So most managers give their number 3 starter 2 starts in April to demote them??
