I don't have any contacts in the Rangers' front-office, but I'm guessing he may play some 1b (which has periodically been a black hole) spell Laird on occasion and maybe even DH some, if/when he's hitting.
In any case, if they called him up it's because they plan to play him. It's up to him to make it stick.

From this it sounds like only catching duties and no decision on just how much yet. The good news is he's here to stay, unless of course he really fails miserably.

This organization has some problems. I know they had to get something for Teixera, and Salty was a great prospect, but they really got screwed.. At the time, I thought it was a good trade but they are just mishandling him so much. There was no reason for him to not make the team and start over Gerald Laird. They guy is a .250 career hitter. He's obviously a better defensive player, but I doubt a couple of months in AAA would have helped him become a great catcher. He is what he is, a great hitter, and a so-so defensive catcher. If his defense was sooooo bad that they couldn't handle him catching, then put him at first base. Instead, they go with Ben Broussard. He had a couple of Ok seasons 5 years ago, but he sucked with the Mariners, and he's batting under .200 this year.

So, they are 8-16 and instead of letting him start somewhere, or hell even give him PT at a combination of C, 1B, and DH, he is still the backup catcher. They said it's more of a split at catcher than a starter/backup situation, but it's still ridiculous. The kid could mash, but he's not getting a chance.
