Werid situation

In my league, 6x6 (typical 5x5 plus OPS and holds), my pitching has been incredible while my hitting is just plain awful. I'm in the top few in each pitching cat other than saves (although I just traded for Street, so hopefully he'll help there), whereas my hitting is near the middle at best. Anyway, I got offered the following trade yesterday:

I get: Jake Peavy, Mike Jacobs
He gets: Kazuo Matsui, Mark Reynolds, Julio Lugo, Oliver Perez

There is clearly no way I can reject this trade, yet me hitting clearly gets worse while my pitching gets way better, which isn't exactly what I need. Anyway, I went ahead and accepted the deal, figuring if nothing else I can trade Peavy for better hitting. I just found it weird, so I thought I would share it with you all.

As always, value over replacement-player is the only thing that matters. Upgrading from Perez to Peavy is an unimaginable upgrade.

While losing Reynolds hurts right now, Lugo and Kaz are easily replaceable in all the but the deepest leagues. As long as there's some viable option in the WW, it's bound to be nearly equivalent.

Worst case scenario, you turn around and trade Peavy for a complete stud in the infield. Problem solved.

I think FF meant this topic to be about the situation he was in (getting an offer that couldn't be refused, but doesn't really help his team), than it being a who wins this trade or should I have accepted this trade post.

I think you ahve to accept a deal like that if it doesn't clearly open up holes (replacement value) anywhere and you are getting the best player possible by far. You ahve to take advantage of situations like this. Help you win.

that is a weird situation...it seems like the guy who offered the trade must not have really looked at your team needs at all in drawing up the trade...apparently he just assessed his needs, and for whatever reason, saw some of your players as filling those needs, and made sure that he was offering something that would get accepted. Maybe he drafted really poorly, and just had alot of holes to fill? Or maybe he's just in love with some of those players? Seems like really questionable strategy no matter his situation. I can hardly imagine the roster that would make a trade offer like that make sense...

Exactly. The trade was not meant to be critiqued and I am not looking for advice. I just wanted to note a situation I've never been in before in fantasy.

Rule of thumb is to take the stud player when you're only dealing a few scrubs relative to that stud you're getting in return, regardless if your scrubs fulfill a need greater than your stud can. So, yes, playing the value game takes precedence over utility especially this early on.
