I don't think he's going to go into the rotation this soon, as the D'backs would have to shut him down in September.

And I think unless Lyon suddenly implodes, they don't have need for Max at closer.

I think he'll be a great middle reliever for a while, and join the rotation later in the year, like Liriano in 2006.

duckbill's right ... this should be Santana '02-03, Liriano '06, Gallardo '07, etc.

The guy has not built up a base of innings pitched in the minors, and the D-backs are certainly not going to have him threatening the 200 IP mark this season. As much as the fantasy community is salivating over the idea of Scherzer as an instant — and permanent — starter, we're not gonna get both. If he starts right away, he'll be shut down. If he gets key starts late in the year, it's because he's been measured out in careful doses during the summer.

Still, unless you're in small/shallow re-drafts, his potential numbers can be very useful even in a pen role. I had all three of those guys listed in my first line, in the years cited, and had few complaints.

What is the best fantasy play for this guy right now? (in a non keeper)
1. Trade him while he's a hot commodity
2. Keep him and ride out the excellent relief appearances
3. Hold onto him and hope that he's chocolate cake funkylicious
Let's go Oliver Perez and his METS!

I am contemplating dropping Smoltz for him, my starters are pretty well stacked and don't see anyone else to drop for him, maybe Thome. Great outing last night by Scherzer, I do think that Mad Max might be better suited for the Pen this year. It would be tough to have him take on a key role in getting them to the playoffs then having to shut him down just before the playoffs b/c they don't want a Prior-like flameout by one of their best young arms.

Look at my roster and see who you would drop for him, it is in my Sig. Thome? Tulow? E. Santana? I know pretty much whoever I drop will be snatched up quickly. Maybe I don't even pick him up?

...or Myers. I'm not too sold on him, either.
