Rays claimed Dan Johnson off of waivers today

LH power bat that they can play at 1B or DH. With the way Hinske has hit I hope this means they will demote Haynes and play Hinske in RF, Pena at 1B and DH Johnson until Floyd gets healthy

I have always like Johnson. A few years ago I even pegged him as a super breakout player. His bat could definitely be used as a DH/1B backup. It will be interesting to see if he has the drive to want to produce.

He is a nice addition.
And he is a very solid bat to have off the bench later on in the season.

Think they will send down Elliot Johnson anytime soon?

Niemann Optioned to make room

ST. PETERSBURG -- A week after recording his first Major League victory, Jeff Niemann was optioned to Triple-A Durham on Sunday to make room on the 25-man roster for first baseman Dan Johnson, who was claimed off waivers from the A's.

Niemann picked up the win in his first Major League start, April 13 against the Orioles, then he took the loss Friday night against the White Sox. Johnson has not yet arrived, but a move had to be made Sunday, and Niemann turned out to be the guy.

"I knew that was a possibility," said Niemann, who posted a 5.79 ERA. "[There are] a lot of guys here, and that's just how it works."

Several other moves are yet to be made. Catcher Dioner Navarro is expected to be activated from the disabled list prior to Tuesday's game, which means one of the backup backstops will need to return to Durham.

"Navvy has to play tomorrow night, and we'll see how he comes through that before we make our final move Tuesday," Rays manager Joe Maddon said.

In other rehab news, Matt Garza has been tabbed to be the Rays' starter on Friday against the Red Sox. Garza pitched 3 2/3 innings in a start for Class A Vero Beach on Sunday. Since a pitcher was sent down Sunday to make room for a position player, a position player will be sent out Friday to make room for Garza.

Niemann would have pitched Thursday. Now, Andy Sonnanstine will move up from Friday to fill that slot.

"I'm going to take away a wealth of information from the seven days I've been up here," Niemann said. "[I'm going to] go back and really put that to use."

I wonder who gets the cut this weekend when Garza comes back? I would assume Ruggiano.

I am hoping it is Haynes because Johnson is a left handed bat and the only other right handed bat we have on the bench would be Gomes and Johnson as a switch hitter. I bet it will still be Ruggiano, but I wish it were Haynes, he is %-6

Tougher question is who goes down to the minors for Navvy?

Riggans or Difiliece?

Who moves to the Pen for Kaz?

I would guess it will be Jackson if he doens't rebound merely because Hammel has better numbers :-?

I think Hammel moves to the minors once Kazmir comes back in a few weeks. But really I don't care as long as Kazmir makes it back and gives our rotation a lift.

Think so? He is out of options so he would have to pass waivers. I am not sure the Rays would do that because someone may grab him. I could care less, but I think the Rays would not want to give him away for free

Looks like Difelice is gone:

Mark Topkin wrote

They appeared to decide on the next, as veteran backup C Mike DiFelice was seen saying goodbye and hugging teammates before leaving the clubhouse, making room for C Dioner Na-varro's expected return Tuesday.
