Twins Catching Situation

Postby Dude86 » Tue Feb 24, 2004 12:01 am

Does anyone know whats actually going with Twins and catcher? Is it Mauer's job to lose? Are they gonna wait until the end of spring training to determine thier starting catcher?

On a sidenote did anyone read that article on Mauer in the new ESPN the magazine? It really makes him sound good...

Articles about me are supposed to make me sound good. However, yes, I am the starting catcher....but since I am a rookie who knows how many games during the season I will start.....but I got good stuff. ;-D

i wouldnt rely totally on what sports magazines say to determine a player's fantasy value. a few years ago SI did a cover story on sean burroughs that made him sound like the next big thing. he is a solid player, but no more than a backup in most leagues.

as far as mauer goes, i dont have high expectations for this year. guys like victor martinez and miguel olivo were almost as hyped as mauer is now and they turned out to not be ready. Toby hall came up with some hype as well. traditionally, catchers take longer to develop at the major league level, especially on offense. look at posada. he was a top prospect and even he had to share the duties with girardi for a few years.

i guess id take a shot at mauer as my backup catcher in a keeper league, but i think its a little too early to make him your starter. from what i understand, he hits for very high average, but the power has yet to arrive.
