Here's a question. If the marriage was completely consensual, with no allegations of rape, would there still be this outcry?

The point that many are making is that a 12-year-old is incapable of consenting to sex with an adult, at least legally. So "consensual" sex between a 12-year-old and a 40-year-old is rape.

Yeah... There are sort of two discussions interwoven here. One is people pointing out that no matter what, this is against the law. The other is a discussion about whether or not the law is justifiable. I think the first point is really undebatable.

I've been following the conversation but stayed out of it until now. You nailed it. That point is the bottom line for the whole thing. It is irrelevant what anyone thinks of the law, it does not make it ok to break the law. Some can fully believe with all their might that it's ok to wed off a 12 year old girl to a 40 year old man knowing they will have sex, reproduce, etc. They can believe it's the custom of those people, their religion, or whatever. The simple fact is that the people responsible for this situation do not write the laws of the United States. The United States doesn't and shouldn't re-write the laws of the land based on what a select group thinks is ok. If they did, women still wouldn't be able to vote or have their faces seen in public. And while some may think it's a no-brainer that a law preventing women from being able to vote or have their faces seen in public is silly, it's also a no-brainer that wedding off 12 year old girls is just as silly.

And again, disagreeing with the law never makes it legal or ok to break the law.

Are you 35? You are, right?

If so, you could be the next Teddy Roosevelt. We could really use another Teddy right about now. :-°

If Rick Astley wasn't English, he'd be my write-in candidate.

O:-)

I'd love to see a good candidate run for office. They'd win it in a landslide. Unfortunately we haven't had a good one in awhile. Maybe someday, but hopefully sooner rather than later.

This just went to a whole, new level.

Watch the complete video. I say kill this guy slowly and painfully.

Or send him to Guantanamo. He's a terrorist in my mind.

In most states, 13 year olds cannot give legal consent, the law does not give them that right because their parents are supposed to make good decisions. That is why they have statutory rape statutes. If you are over 18 and your girl (or boyfriend, in the creepy female teacher cases...) isn't you are raping her, even if she sends you text messages about how much she loves you and wants you to take her to the 8th grade dance in May (eeeew...).

Parents are supposed to be responsible but, when they are in a club of wierdos like this one, I think that it is very proper that the parents judgement is being called into question. If they are that into this stuff, I think that they should get one way tickets to Afghanistan or Saudi Arabia where these sorts of creeps are running the show. It might get lonely for them if Obama pulls out but this lifestyle is a gruesomely bad choice on their part. It's too bad for the moms and too bad for the kids but the moms needed to have Lorena Bobbitted these losers a long time ago.
