Scandal

Postby Dodgerbluesc » Wed Apr 16, 2008 3:58 am

This scandal is considered by some to be a pre-cursor to the Black Sox scandal.

The 1908 National League Pennant was ultimately decided by a one-game playoff between the Giants and the Cubs. This game was to make up a tie between the two teams earlier in the year, and the winner will face Detroit in the World Series. The umpires for this game are Bill Klem and Jimmy Johnstone. Minutes before the game, Bill Klem is approached by a man named Joseph Creamer, who offered Klem a $2500 bribe (about Klem's annual salary) to rig the game to make sure the Giants win.

The umpires asked to be excused from officiating but there are no alternatives. They stay to ump, the Cubs win the game and go on to win the world series - as you know, their last world series.

The question is, who are the three members of the New York Giants that Joseph Creamer claimed to be representing?
