Cubbies starting pitching situation

Postby Magnus_CA » Sun Apr 13, 2008 10:53 am

Hill is already on his way to the bullpen and Lilly doesn't sound too far behind him. What does this mean for the Cub's rotation? Who will be asked to fill in? Possible AAA promotion coming?

Hill will be returning to the rotation in th next week, he worked out his mechanical probelms in the BP on Saturday. Considering Lilly gets $10 MM a yer, I don't see him BP bound

Hill has been made "available" to the pen, but is already penciled in for a start next weekend sometime (Fri? Sat?). He may yet throw in relief, say, Tuesday. If the opp. is there and Cubs' management wants to see where he's at. But there's no long-term demotion being discussed at this point.
And Lilly's going to have to struggle quite a bit more before he's kicked to the curb.

no AAA promotion to the SP ranks. they may rotate RP with AAA but not starters. If they decide to go with a spot starter it will be Lieber.

As posted on Rotoworld 4/14:

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Rich Hill is now the Cubs' fifth starter, and that the team will skip the spot as off days allow.

Jason Marquis has been bumped up in the rotation, and will start Friday against the Pirates. Hill will start Saturday, and appears to be on a short leash. "We've got [Sean] Marshall and [Jon] Lieber that deserve an opportunity also. I'm not talking about now. I'm talking down the road a little bit," Piniella said.

Not really great news, and it will be really hard for Hill to get on track with sporadic starts. I had great hopes for this guy, and was projecting some real solid numbers. If he gets bombed his next start, he might not be worth owning in a standard 12 teamer.
...Boston papers now and then suffer a sharp flurry of arithmetic on this score; indeed, for Williams to have distributed all his hits so they did nobody else any good would constitute a feat of placement unparalleled in the annals of selfishness. -Updike
