Study Music?

Postby tuff_gong » Sat Apr 12, 2008 2:22 pm

For all you crazy college kids out there, what kind of music do you guys like to study to. I have been listening to the same four or five albums for about a year now while I study, and it's starting to drive me crazy. :-S :-{ Any recommendations you guys have would be awesome.

The albums I listen to currently (including right now as I try to study for a test I have Monday):

Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
The Decemberists - The Crane Wife
Coldplay - Parachutes
...and in the winter time before X-mas, Vince Guaraldi Trio - A Charlie Brown Christmas B-) :-b

Well that's just like, your opinion man.

I listened to thrash metal all day when I studied and it really isn't any different. The funny thing is listening to metal disrupts your brainwaves while listening to classical music makes you more coherent at the other extreme, but for me, I found myself being more focused listening to metal than anything and it had shown. 90% of folks can't do it and so that makes me special and thus, I won't give you any recommendations. :-D

Go to jango.com or pandora.com and you'll quickly find an awesome "study station" for yourself while also finding a lot of new artists/songs.

John Coltrane - Coltrane's Sound
Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers - Moanin'
The Bad Plus - Prog
Stanton Moore - III
Sinatra w/ Count Basie - It Might as Well Be Swing

The first 2 are traditional jazz (not everybody's thing, I know), but the second two are pretty different. My students who typically say they don't like jazz even like them. Frank needs no introduction.

I was a history major and took quite a few lit classes and kind of got into the habit of listening to period music from whenever I was reading about. I went to college in the mid-80s so I could always pick a couple of albums up for a few bucks if I didn't have a good selection in my collection. I still do this today and invariably fire up Duke Ellington while I'm reading up for my baseball drafts... ;-D
