Is Joey Gathright a post-hype sleeper?

Postby twistedude » Thu Apr 10, 2008 7:07 am

Leading the AL with 6 steals so far, yet nobody talks about him. I realize he's no Tony Gwynn with the bat, but if Gathright continues to get on base at a reasonable rate, he could end up with 40 steals this year, no? What do you see Gathright's potential as? Is he going to retain his every day spot in the lineup when Dejesus returns?

He should have a spot for the next few weeks seeing as how dejesus won't return till this weekend and guillen's 15 game suspension will most likely begin early next week. After that nothing is guaranteed.

edit: it seems as though theres a good chance guillens suspension will be lifted. keep an eye on the situation.

He won't have a starting spot when DeJesus comes back....with that said there is some talk that DeJesus could get traded, so we'll see.

The problem with the premise is that Gathright isn't getting on base at a reasonable rate. .216 BA with a .257 OBP is insanely awful. About the only thing that is worse is his slugging, just about all of his hits are bunt hits so if he comes to bat with forced runners on base he is practically a guaranteed out. Once DeJesus is healthy Gathright will be right back where he belongs, the occasional spot start and pinch runner.

the only reason that I would ever even remotely consider picking him up would to get a small bump in steals. I definitely would not want him to be one of my starting outfielders and watch my homerun, RBI and BA stats plummet.

dejesus doesn't bring enough game to leadoff for the royals. he just isn't the answer. pretty unremarkable stats for a leadoff hitting CF.

not great in any one specific area

at least w/ gaithright he's an excellent defender and he's shown the potential to get better rasing his obp,....+ his speed is usa olymic like.

real life or fantasy..u ain't gunna win w/ david dejusus leading off..

you aren't going to win with guys who should be running track, either.

Gathright is a track guy masquerading as a bad baseball player.

gaithrights stats from both the minors and majors last year were very promising ..

he made steps is the right direction getting on base, and while he'll never hit any hoe-mas....he would easily swipe 50-70 w/ a full time gig

he just needs to stay at the same level he played at last year and he would be a pretty valuable starting CF

don't know if he will get the chance for 650 abs,...but sustaining his level of play from last year is very possible..the indicators are there.
