2002 No. 1 pick Bullington finally wins one: Bryan Bullington tossed eight shutout innings in the Royals' 1-0 win over the Yankees.
The right-hander gave up just two hits, walked one and struck out five. Those that had August 15, 2010 in the Bullington "win" pool, it's time to collect. The former first overall pick has been a colossal bust and is in his fourth organization. He's now pitched 60 innings at the major league level and can finally be called a winner for the first time. Bullington was supposed to only be filling in for Brian Bannister for a couple starts, but this outing, along with a solid start last week, might have earned him some more starts. He may or may not face the White Sox this weekend. Aug. 15 - 5:23 pm et
Franklin Gutierrez left Tuesday's game because he was hyperventilating, according to the Mariners. Can you blame him? The Mariners scored five runs in the second inning against the A's. They hadn't even scored more than three runs in a game since Aug. 25. We imagine Gutierrez will be fine for Wednesday.
•The White Sox claimed releiver Waldis Joaquin off of waivers from the White Sox, according to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune. The 23-year-old made the Giants' Opening Day roster, but allowed six earned runs and seven walks in 4 2/3 innings, so he was demoted to the minors. He posted a 4.43 ERA with 8.9 K/9 and 5.5 BB/9 in 40 2/3 innings split between Rookie ball and Triple-A.
Seems kind of counter productive to claim a player from yourself?
I really underestimated how terrible Gordon Beckham's 2010 was.
Beckham went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored in the White Sox's win over the Indians on Friday.
Recommendation: It took Beckham until July 11 to record his first double last season and fantasy owners would be content if Beckham could avoid last year's early-season swoon.
Troy Tulowitzki homered in both games on Thursday's doubleheader against the Mets, giving him seven bombs on the season. And 22 homers in his last four games overall. Tulo is one of just two players in MLB with more than four homers, as Nelson Cruz leads the AL with five.
Ryan Franklin served up a ninth inning home run to Matt Kemp in a non-save situation Thursday night. Franklin's outing actually lowered his ERA from 9.82 to 9.64. If he keeps this up, he should get down to 9.00 in no time.
Hamels was getting dressed at his clubhouse stall when a local TV cameraman pointed his electronic eye Hamels' way. It upset the shirtless pitcher and he chose to leave before the interviews began
Dustin Ackley (ribs) went 1-for-3 with an RBI Sunday in his return to the Blue Jays' lineup. Ackley sat out Friday and Saturday after bruising his ribs during Wednesday's game against the Braves. The 23-year-old should have no restrictions going forward.
Jul 24 Thome is in the Twins' starting lineup Sunday, one day after sitting in deference to Jason Kubel, the Star Tribune's La Velle E. Neal III reports.
Recommendation: Even at 87 years old, Thome is still among the Twins' better hitters.
