The News
Scot Shields will likely be the Angels' closer until Francisco Rodriguez returns from his ankle injury, according to MVN.com.

Our View
The setup man's fantasy value should rise a bit for the time being.

I agree that K-rod needs to rest. Both ankles twisted? ....I surely don't want him trying to overthrow and mess up his mechanics even further (maybe inducing more injuries).

With Shields just coming off the DL would Speier be worth picking up?

I just picked up Speier, hopefully he gets the nod over Shields.

Well, technically he can't overthrow. His fastball has lost about 3mph from his usual velocity and so that has led K-Rod to pitch with caution so as not to aggravate his ankle. Therefore, he hasn't quite looked sharp so far since camp.

I think Shields will assume closing duties if K-Rod needs some rest in between or goes on the DL, but I'd also keep an eye on Justin Speier.

Will Carroll on K-Rod:

I know that I just said that Rodriguez's altered mechanics didn't bother me, and I know that I just said that his reduced velocity didn't bother me. What does bother me is that in a classic case of a cascade of injuries, the Angels closer has now injured his push ankle, something that's likely to send him to the DL. With Scot Shields already back and pitching effectively, it's a smart move for the Angels to put their closer on the shelf for a couple weeks now, let him get both of his ankles healed up, and make sure that he doesn't injure himself by making any further alterations. The episode gives me a new respect for Rodriguez's self-awareness; it's perhaps a tell on how he's survived with what appears to be such a violent motion. Rodriguez thinks a DL stint will help, but the Angels are known for playing down a man in the bullpen, so I doubt a quick decision will be made. In this case, I think Rodriguez is right, and that a couple weeks off should help immensely.

from RW:

The Angels announced Wednesday that an MRI on Francisco Rodriguez's injured right ankle showed no torn ligaments or tendons.

The team is said to be hoping that Rodriguez can at least throw a bullpen session over the weekend and it's possible that he could see game action instead. Rodriguez's ankle problems remain a concern, but for now at least it looks like he'll avoid the disabled list.

at this pt, id think id rather see him DL it...get truly healthy & then blast it for rest of season. last thing any of us want is a gimpy "top-notch" closer walking 1-2 guys every time out. sounds like ppl can probably start him next wk if they like risks...
