felix has had injury problems in the past, its his second start of the season and hes thrown 100 pitches... if hes asking to be taken out (which i would guess is pretty rare) then take him out and don't risk him overexerting and hurting him... i'm upset about not getting the win too but the bullpen should be able to go an inning without giving up a couple of runs

Actually, I would go just the opposite way. If McLaren forced Felix to throw more pitches after he said he was tired and done for the day, I would call him an idiot. Why force a young player to overexert themselves, especially the first week of the season? The last thing Seattle needs is Felix to strain a muscle trying to finish a complete game. Let's not get so excited as to blame the manager when it was the players who failed to perform.

I don't have a problem with how he handled the situation today at all, but I just don't like how he uses the bullpen regularly. I like how he used O'Flaherty vs. the lefties, since we only have two LHPs to call on we have to use them in the right situations. Today was just simply a case of the players not getting the job done, and is a perfect example of how even the best rotation in the MLB can't guarantee wins.

I agree Hootie, Felix should have the midset of 9 innings and being a horse. But if McLaren had done that and Felix blown the game (or God forbid gotten hurt! :-o ), then the fans never would have let him hear the end of it. An injury and the fans would have been screaming for his job once word came out that Felix asked to be taken out.

It would have been shades of Dusty Baker. I can't blame McLaren for taking Felix out if he said he was done for the night and the pitching coach agreed. They were up by two runs with only one inning left in the game. I know he didn't have Putz, but the bullpen should be able to handle that, especially against a rather weak team.

I was at this game yesterday (one of a few), and you could hear a collective exhale from the O's fans in attendance....also several expletives from the Mariners fans when King Felix was removed. Felix seemed in good spirits in the 7th....everytime that he K'd someone, Beltre would rifle it back to him and he would do a little crow-hop before catching it.

I personally think that Trembley botched his entire bench rotation, forcing him to hit L. Hernandez in the 9th (which worked out brilliantly :-D ). He pinch-hit Scott Moore for Quinoz in the 8 spot in the 8th w/ Markakis at 3rd, only to have Ramon replace Quinoz at catcher in the 8 spot after the AB. He could have simply hit Ramon right there....Moore (lefty vs. KingK'd and looked horrible in the AB, while Ramon is a relatively clutch hitter IMO compared to most other O's. So, he didn't have Moore to hit in Luis' spot in the 9th....he also pinch ran Adam Jones in the 9th, so his only option was basically Fahey.

Felix was only at 97 pitches. It would be shades of Dusty Baker if McLaren left him in to throw 140. I don't see the harm in putting Felix in to start the inning, and then seeing how it goes. I didn't see the game, so I don't know if Felix was visibly tired. Was he? If so, then I can see why he went to the bullpen. But if not, I don't see the reason that you'd automatically yank him and put your team in a riskier position to lose the game.

I am all about pitcher abuse. 97 pitches it isn't a issue. You can blame the 2 rp who didn't get it done. I don't. I'm disappointed in Felix. He just doesn't have that killer instinct. Great pitchers can smell that win. They don't ask to not go back out. He's going to lose alot of W's in his career, unless he wants to go 9, and can smell the wins. I haven't seen it so far.

That's probably the biggest thing here. It's very disappointing that he didn't want to go back out for the ninth with a shutout going. Definitely too bad. McLaren is certainly an idiot and I'm disappointed that he's the manager but what can you do? If Felix really couldn't go out in the ninth I really don't have a problem with the strategy yesterday, it just didn't work out. Unfortunately I think we're in for a long year unless we start scoring some damn runs. :-[

The paper today states that perhaps the offense was just as responsible for the loss. I don't buy that at all. Sure they need to score more, then the 4 runs per game they are averaging. But the bottom line is, it was a 2 run lead in the 9th. Doesn't matter if the score is 2-0, or 9-7. The win probability for a team up 2 in the 9th is 93.7% I don't blame the offense one bit, in this particular game.
