Sick Pitching Staff...But Can I Compete?

Postby MendozaLineup » Wed Mar 26, 2008 8:52 am

10 Team, Roto, 5x5, Keeper (4 players):

C: I. Rodriguez
1B: P. Konerko
2B: R. Weeks
3B: R. Braun (keeper, 14th round)
SS: R. Furcal
OF: M. Holliday (4th round)
OF: G. Sizemore
OF: S. Victorino
UT: J. Francoeur/J. Thome

SP: J. Peavy
SP: B. Webb
SP: J. Smoltz
SP: C. Young (10th round)
SP: T. Lincecum (13th round)
SP: J. Lackey (picked up in 12th with eye on keeper)
RP: J. Soria
RP: J. Borowski
RP: B. Lyon
RP: R. Betancourt
RP: J. Broxton

What do you think? Clearly, my main weakness appears to be relief pitching, but I'd appreciate any thoughts you may have to get better....Thanks!

your right in thinking that your weakness is in relief pitching. Lackey in the 12th? :-D ;-D. See if maybe you can work a deal to trade away an over-performing reliever and Thome (getting older) to upgrade to a solid closer. Good luck this season, I see a second or third place finish for your current team.

Your middle infield is a little weak, but you made some nice steals in your draft. I would consider dealing one of those pitchers for a nice infielder. You could deal one of your premier pitchers for a good SS and stud RP.

Holliday in the 4th round? Jeez. It's hard when all the closers get snapped up, but you might want to deal for one.

Yeah, Holliday was a keeper.

I hate dealing for saves though; especially when they materialize on the FA list during the year. Any cheap targets I should go after?

Thanks for your input on mine.

I agree, SP is very strong. I wouldn't make RP a priority, it is week, but look to FA's as they change hands.

Middle infield could be a concern. I would look for someone to back up Weeks, I think Furcal will bounce back. And keep an eye on Konerko, but I'm sure there will be good 1st basemen on the FA list during the season. Otherwise, looks good.

I don't really mind your RP's...they are cheap and undervalued. Definitely a sick staff. I would try and deal one of them for some more strength up the middle.

Awesome pitching staff and some great steals in the draft... Furcal has looked great this spring and has a good line-up around him, the same with Weeks. You could upgrade but you might have to deal a SP/Ace, which could be an option, since your staff is pretty well stacked. I'd just watch the FAs or waivers.

Lackey is going to be a force this year but ...

Mar 25 Lackey (triceps strain) is not expected to pitch during the first month of the season, the Associated Press reports.

He'll bounce back for sure, he's a beast.

hey thanks for the help on mine

you got a great team

And I don't think your RP situation is that bad, especially if you keep a close eye on the waiver wire. If you feel you really need someone I might consider assessing your starters and if most are performing trading someone like Smoltz or Young for a good closer.
