He's not doing anything this spring from what I heard. Tough spot for the Rangers who had huge regards for him. I bet they keep him up though.

Salty's contract pays him $400K this year. Laird's $1.6M. Who do you think the Rangers want in their every day lineup?
By the way his spring has not been that bad, Laird's has been a little better though.

I think they will send him down to work on his defense. I read a Dallas newspaper article that quoted Ron Washington saying that hes a defensive liability at this point. He has like six passed balls in 12 games.
I wouldnt count on him for a whole lot this season unless they trade Laird.

ESPN - Gerald Laird was named the starting catcher for the Texas Rangers on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia was sent down to the minors and will start every day at Triple-A Oklahoma.

I haven't heard of anything disappointing with his defense at catcher. They were thinking about trying to make him a 1B for this year to keep him in the show, like they did part-time last season. Hoping he could displace the mythically powerful bat of Broussard.
They want Salty to get full-time at bats and they don't want to mess with the young guy and try to make him learn a completely different position. I think their hope is that Laird hits like they think he will so they can trade him to a contender close to the deadline for a prospect and bring Salty up.
