First draft, any help appreciated!

Postby booboo123 » Tue Mar 25, 2008 11:13 am

Hi Guys...

This is my first fantasy baseball team (long time F.football player). Im in a yahoo 5x5 autodraft. Here's what was picked for me. Any help with glaring weaknesses etc, would be greatly appreciated :)

C - McCann
1B - V. Martinez
2B - Utley
3B - C. Figgins
SS - Renteria
OF - Holiday, Rios, Abreu
Util - Sheffield
BN - Justin Upton, Michael Bourn

SP - James Shields, J. Maine, Bonderman, Wainwright, Arroyo
RP - Jenks, Hoffman, Marmol, Percival, Tom Gordon

I feel like im light at the corners and pitching... any advice for the noob? :-)
Here's some of the possible FA's I see available:
1B - derosa, wiggington, blake
SS - Theriot
SP - Lester, Westbrook, Buerhle
RP - K. Wood

I'd trade either McCann or Victor Martinez for a legit 1B. You don't need two and i'm sure there's someone in the league that is looking at their catcher with disgust right now. Your offense looks pretty solid.

Starting pitching is your biggest weakness. Try trading bullpen arms for starters. And Kerry Wood has got the closing job so he immediately has value that you could use in a trade.

Very solid team.

I would keep both your catchers. VMart hits just as good as other first basemen and Mcann is good for 100 RBIs. So keep both players.

Overall your offense, I don't see any glaring weaknesses, I would add a more versatile player to your bench such as Wigginton but its a rather tough call on whether you should drop Upton or Bourn. I would go with Upton personally.

For your pitching i would go ahead and add Kerry Wood. Even though Gordon is replacing Lidge right now its only for a short amount of time so I would go ahead and drop Gordon for Wood. Your starters are ok, Arroyo is nothing special, Buehrle might be a better option, hes generally more consistent too but doesn't offer much in terms of fantasy. Right now just hold on to Arroyo and see how he does in his first two starts and by that time there might be a hot (SP) commodity floating around in FA.

Auto did a good job for once, usually it loads up on hitters when it drafts for me lol.

Good looking team overall. I would pursue the FA pitchers. I see more value in Lester, Buerhele, & Wood than I do Wainwright, Arroyo, & most of your current RPs. The offense looks nice. Keep both McCann & Martinez to play 1B.

I like your team a lot. One thing I would definitely consider is putting Victor Martinez to C because you are losing his value at 1B because C is much more of a demand. Then trade off McCann for a solid 1B. Very good pitching. I don't see an ace in your pitching lineup but you definitely have guys that could turn out to be just that this season so I'm not worried there. Unless holds is a catagory get rid of Tom Gordon (even if holds is a catagory there has to be someone better for that than old Gordon. Even me being a Phillies Fan) and pick up Wood considering he actually has a closing job right now. And even if he doesn't keep it he's better than Gordon. Other than that GREAT TEAM! Hope I helped and good luck!

Guys,
I just wanted to say thanks for the time and great replies :)

I went ahead and dumped gordon for Wood, and put out feelers for trading McCann for a 1B...

Thanks again!!

I think the two catchers are fine, though it is a good point that a solid catcher is good trade fodder. Good on you for snapping up Wood. I think that'll pay off. Gordon isn't as solid a choice, ALTHOUGH he will fill in for Lidge closing for a bit. Good luck!
