Capuano out! Parra IN???

Postby Mr. Goodwrench » Sun Mar 23, 2008 7:12 pm

Just read a report that Chris Capuano tore an elbow ligament and will need the 2nd tommy john surgery of his career. Ending his 2008 season before it started. Add this to Gallardo's injury, I think this will open up a rotation spot for Manny Parra. Anyone have any thoughts if this would elevate his value to a must pick-up pitcher in mixed leagues? I hate to miss the train on this one! ;-7

I keep hearing conflicting speculation. Some think Vargas will get a spot, some thing Villanueva will, and some think Parra will.

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (http://blogs.jsonline.com/brewers/archi ... minds.aspx)

1. After Ben Sheets and Jeff Suppan, it appears Manny Parra, Dave Bush and Claudio Vargas are the front-runners. We expect to hear later today that Chris Capuano is going on the DL with an elbow problem, and Carlos Villanueva could be headed to Nashville to start there.

I think Parra gets the rotation spot because he is the loan lefty in that group. Would the Brewers actually go w/ all righties?

My personal guess is that Parra will begin the season as a starter, but only get a few starts until Gallardo comes back. It's possible, but I find it unlikely that Bush or Vargas gets pushed to the pen when Gallardo returns.

Mar 23-It appears that Villanueva will be the odd man out and start the season at Triple-A Nashville, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Recommendation: Nothing is official at this point, but Claudio Vargas is out of options and it's not likely that the Brewers would send Dave Bush to the minors. That leaves Manny Parra and Villanueva for one rotation spot and Parra is simply a better pitcher. The rotation will get even tighter when Yovanni Gallardo returns from the DL in mid-April so it may take some injuries before Villanueva gets another shot.

News from rotowire. Now the list seems to keep on getting shorter! I am really thinking hard about picking up Parra. :-)

I would look at all my options before picking him up. 8-o

Agreed, but at this point teams have been drafted and moves have been made. Most of us are looking for that diamond in the rough :-) I know I am...

Drafted him a little early (16th round) of a very competitive league where SPs are often scarce, and I am looking good now :) Now lets come out of the gate strong Parra ....

I think Parra was in good standing even before Cappy's injury. I think he's nearly a lock now as a starter. He's had some past injuries, but he's a solid sleeper in NL-only leagues and maybe beyond. He does seem to pile up Ks. I like.
