Mike Napoli

Postby skjelstrom » Sat Mar 22, 2008 12:29 pm

No one has picked up Mike Napoli in my league. I have Jason Varitek for my catcher. Should I pick up Mike Napoli in case he has a huge season? He could be a backup for Varitek or should I just replace Varitek with him? What is so great about him? Is it worth it to pick him up hoping for the best or should I just leave it?

If you have the space, I think he will do well this year. When healthy, he has shown a lot of power, but he strikes out a lot. Varitek is in a contract year so he could do well, but he is old and Napoli is young, and the Angels lineup is pretty solid.

He's definitely worth a bench spot, for use when Varitek takes a day off, or maybe more with the right matchups.

I like Napoli as well. The only problem is that it seems like he only catches 3 or 4 times a week. But when he's in he does seem to do well.

Anybody got a feel for how much time Napoli is going to get in with the Angels. I got sorta stuck with him in a 6 man AL only league (he was the only pitcher left that didn't have severe negative value). I talked to a friend whose a rabid LA fan and he figured that Napoli would be the starting catcher but it might be a 55%/45% thing with the kid.

The Angels have Mathis too. But Napoli is a far better defensive catcher and the manager there is a fan. He should get at least 60% of the starts this season and if he does better than expected hitting bump that up to 70%. I'd say a nice backup plan to Varitek no doubt.

I always thought it was Mathis that was the better defensive catcher. Napoli is a nice source of power from the catcher position and might even steal you a handful of bases. His batting average can hurt you though.

I noticed his projections just jumped on rotowire. They must think he will get the job and more AB. i jut pulled him off the Waiver wire. If they are wrong I can dump him back in the pond.
