Kerry Wood, who was supposed to work on back-to-back days for the first time this spring, had to be scratched from Wednesday's appearance because of back spasms.
"Look, we do have one setback with Kerry today -- his back is really, really stiff and he's not going to be able to pitch today," manager Lou Pineilla said. "It has nothing to do with his shoulder, or elbow, it's just with his back. He went to see a doctor, and hopefully we'll get him out there (Thursday) or the next day." Piniella wants Wood in the closer's role, but it's unclear if he'd hand him the role without him having pitched on back-to-back days first.

this sounds like a day to day thing but IMO we are foolish to think Wood would be able to go a full year without problems. He throws across his body so back problems seem like a logical injury.

This situation will be sloppy if Wood isn't going to consistently be able to throw games 2 or 3 days in a row, which is necessary of closers. The last thing I'd wanna see is a committee.

I agree completely.A big issue Joe Torre had with Kyle Farnsworth last season is that he couldn't go with Farnsworth on consecutive days because of his back issues.Not a doctor, but if Wood's situation is like Farnsworth pitching on consecutive days, key for a closer, will be an issue.
