Joey Votto

Anyone know what Dusty is going to do with Votto? I read on rotoworld the other day Votto might start the year in AAA. Why in the world would Dusty go with a vet that has 0 upside over Votto? Makes no sense why Dusty will bury his young arms into the ground but baby his young hitters. Reds are going to regret hiring this guy in about 3 months, if not sooner.

Votto is hitting .139 in 36 Spring at-bats. If Spring Training is really a competition, Dusty's hand may be forced. At this point, I would expect Votto to start the year at AAA and be called up in April or May.

That being said, spring is not over. I believe that the Reds want Votto to win a spot and if he catches fire in the next week he could still make the team outright.

i guess he still has options left so he is a risk to start in the minors. but jeez he has like 3000 minor league PAs and a sucessfull 07 callup. i just dont think its very likely.

I avoided all the young Reds because Baker is the devil and any young player is one cold streak away from a platoon or the minors.

"If Votto makes the team, he almost certainly would start at first base. If it's Hatteberg, Votto should go to Triple-A Louisville to play every day. While Hatteberg is having a much better spring, expect Votto to get the nod."

And I just dropped Votto for C. Patterson, and somebody picked him up :~(

Contrary to what people on this board want to believe, Baker really wanted Votto to start the year as the starting first baseman, but he's been pretty much horrible this spring.

I think the feeling in Cincy, where you hear rumblings of "best rotation since 1990" coupled with assuredly bad Houston and St Louis teams, is that they can win now. Hatteberg would certainly seem the logical choice to start the season if you believe they can.

Latest Yahoo blurb has this to say-

Mar 23 1B Joey Votto was a strong performer last September and will get a chance to play regularly this year.

P.S.

I think it's important fantasy-wise to consider that no matter who wins the job, they will likely have a platoon partner.
