Question about Auto draft strategy

Postby titanut » Thu Feb 19, 2004 9:11 pm

11 team 5 x5 league. I have made my first 20 picks all bats. Effectively bagging Prior, RJ, Pedro and Schilling. I hope to pick
up 3 strong bats in the first 3 rounds. Then I start adding pitchers,
alternating with batters, hope to get a solid pitcher in the 4th round.
I plan on using this strategy for picks 21-40. I have done a lot of
research on the players, so hopefully my rankings are ok. What
do you guys think of this strategy ?

A lot of strategies can work very well in autodrafts, and there's no reason why this one shouldn't. The main thing is ranking carefully, and not making any glaring omissions.

I like to do the reverse, though, and go heavy on pitchers early. With many teams going that route of stacking up on bats in the opening rounds, aces are often significantly undervalued, giving you a greater edge than paying full value for the top hitters...

if its auto-draft, you cant predict what you'll be getting, because everyone has different rankings, all the pitchers you may want after u grab ur batters could be taken, or maybe the batters could be, leaving you wil many more batters in a row or a big string of pitchers.

autodraft is basically random, you have some say over who you get but overall its impossible pick or have a true strategy unless its ranking low players really high and hoping no one else did the same.

my strategy is "get in a live draft so you actually have some control"

other than that, make sure you seriously rearrange the yahoo rankings, and just make them solid, the wire after autodrafts have some sillybazilly players on them so make sure to check it right away

I'm the commish of this league- it's in it's 4th year and a live draft
is impossible, the players have their priorities wrong- family and
jobs first- so we have to go with auto draft. When you have really
competitive players, an auto draft league is fun.

You could do a slow email draft.

Is a slow email draft an option with Yahoo? If so, that would be a
great solution.

set your draft setting to offline draft...and do the email draft...then input the results into Yahoo.....

I wouldn't go too slow though...the season's gonna be starting soon! :-)

If i had to do an autopick draft, i'd prefer the way Sportsline does it. You rank your players by position. And then you rank your draft order by position.

So you can tell it you want to draft a SS first. And then 2nd base. And then a SP. Etc. Etc...

if you end up doing an auto draft remove any pitchers that are both Rp and Sp otherwise you might get closer screwed.
