The conventional wisdom seems to be that Mussina is finished. However, there are some data points that might indicate otherwise:
1) PECOTA has a bounceback in store for him - somewhere between '07 and '06 in effectiveness.
2) He has not done badly this spring, including 5 perfect innings against the Pirates this week.
3) If this quote is to be believed, he is benefiting from mentoring from Giardi:
"This spring Girardi has shown evidence of the first attribute in the way he has worked with pitcher Mike Mussina, who was so ineffective last year that many thought his career was over.
From day one of spring training, the manager has preached to Mussina about pitching inside to batters, and it is paying off. This week, Mussina tossed five perfect innings against the Pirates and appears to have clinched a spot in the Yankee starting rotation."
Does anyone think he has a chance to become a decent fantasy pitcher again? To me this means 4.25 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 6.0 K/9 or something like that.
