TIME SENSITIVE: 3rd Minor League Pick

Postby Curtis Pride » Sun Mar 16, 2008 3:56 pm

I've already got Porcello and Lars Anderson so I'm pretty happy so far.

My next pick is up and I'm not really thrilled with anyone available to me (only guys who haven't played in the majors are eligible). I only have a couple hours to make a decision

I'll edit this to make a quicker question:

Here are my options in my mind:
Brett Anderson (OAK)
Carlos Triunfel (SEA)
Hank Conger (ANA)
Taylor Teagarden (TEX)

None of these guys will be available for my next pick, which is 25 spots away
Brett Anderson - young with good control, but I already have Porcello and I don't know how much I want to lever myself to starting pitching prospects

Carlos Triunfel - highest rated of the players available. But he has shown NO power and NO speed. The league counts OPS, so his batting average doesn't help - his lack of walks does

Regarding the catchers:
My league has two catchers and 14 teams, so solid catchers are gold. Teagarden walks a ton, so he'll have good OPS. Conger is younger and ranked higher, but has less of a track record. Also Teagarden is amazing defensively and will absolutely stay at catcher, while Conger may not.

Other guys available
Volstad, Masterson, Scherzer, Jordan Walden, Tim Alderson

Some guys I would look for

1. Deollis Guerra, SP, MIN
2. Pedro Alverez, 3B, Vandy
3. Matt Scherzer
4. Jorden Walden
5. Jed Lowrie

first two not on your list but might be left.

Guerra is gone. As is Jed Lowrie. Alvarez doesn't qualify since he's in college, not in the pros.

Take Taylor Teagarden. If you start 2 catchers, Teagarden will be a fixture for you at catcher within two years. I love his offensive/defensive combo.

Of the guys listed I like Conger the most. Triunfel is a great contact hitter for his age but it remains to be seen how much power he'll develop. Anderson is very polished but his upside is limited because his fastball sits around 90 mph. Teagarden has lots of power but strikes out way too much... reminds me of Mike Napoli. I love Conger's bat; he has the potential to become a Top 5 fantasy catcher.
