Chances Marmol becomes Cubs Closer??

Postby DetroitTigers » Sat Mar 15, 2008 10:17 am

it sounds like Marmol has outperformed Howry and Wood this spring, but Pinella really ins't indicating who will get the job. What do the cafe experts think will happen??

I'm a Sox fan but get plenty of cubs news around here.
I can't see anyone other than Marmol getting the job, long term.
Pineilla may go with one of the veterans early in the season but I'd be suprised if either of them succeed. Then again, Lou may say screw the politics and just go with the best guy (Marmol) from the beginning. In any case, I expect Marmol to be the full time closer by June at the latest.

I actually had the same question and am really on the fence with this one. We start 2 closers in a H2H style league and are only allowed to carry three to prevent hoarding. My 3 are Chad Cordero, BJ Ryan, and Carlos Marmol.

Our wire opens this Tuesday and hope that this situation is cleared up a bit more by then. From what I've been reading is that Lou wants to save Wood's arm as much as possible and it is thought that a closers role might be the best option over middle relief. That really doesn't make that much sense to me. Why not use Wood as a set-up guy and limit him to just the eighth inning and use Marmol as the closer?

I see that mostly everyone who has responded is in favor of Marmol, which is what I was hoping to see :-) , but obviously stevekahuda read something similar to what I read about "Would" :-b

Well, the Tribune basically said, and I quote:

The Chicago Tribune reports Chicago Cubs RP Carlos Marmol has not allowed a run in five spring innings but gave up one hit and two walks Thursday, March 13, in his latest exhibition appearance. "He has had a little trouble working under the ball this spring," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "He has such good stuff he gets away with it. But he's not commanding his fastball very well. I don't know if it's the competition for the job or what. I wouldn't think so."

I'm actually holding both Wood and Marmol and waiting to see a response, I am pretty confident what I am doing won't work in the long haul but hopefully, it might help me get a lead in the beginning.

They'll just start with Marmol, once he flunks, Wood will enter and so on and so forth.

I just saw this. I always figured the best relief pitcher would be the closer, hence the reason for drafting Marmol. Now this kind of stuff happens.

Exactly. Wood will start as the closer. He will then get rocked or get injured, so Marmol will close for the rest of the season.
