Baldelli already on the DL

Postby acsguitar » Wed Mar 12, 2008 2:12 pm

Anyone else want to try to defend his value?

ST. PETERSBURG -- Rays outfielder Rocco Baldelli is going on the disabled list for an indefinite period due to an abnormality that has kept him in a constant stage of fatigue.

Baldelli said he had some type of "metabolic, and/or mitochondrial abnormalities, basically along the lines my body isn't making or producing ATP the right way, and therefore not allowing my muscles to work as they should and recover like they're supposed to on a day-to-day basis."

Rays executive vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman told reporters the Rays will stick by Baldelli to the best of their abilities to help him out in whatever way they can. Friedman also said Baldelli's condition will likely lead to the Rays not picking up the outfielder's option for the 2009 season.

Under the terms of the long-term contract Baldelli signed after the 2005 season, the Rays have until April 1 to decide whether to pick up his $6 million option for 2009. If the Rays decline, they must pay him $4 million, and Baldelli would become a free agent at the end of the 2008 season. If they exercise the option, the Rays would then have to face the same question of whether to renew him for '10 and '11 at a cost of $17 million, or buy him out at $2 million.

Friedman said the Rays will soon begin addressing what they will do without Baldelli, who was being counted on to be part of a "right-field triangle" with Cliff Floyd and Jonny Gomes, in which two of the three would play right field and DH on a daily basis.

I was just about to post this.

This is the begining of the end of his career IMO.

The only absolutes in life, taxes death and Baldelli being on the DL

Seriously, though, that really sucks for him because the guy was a great talent and should have been one of the superstars of MLB.

Not sure why someone getting hurt is funny but...

I feel bad for the guy but not surprised that he is hurt again.

Moises Alou already beat him to the DL but he's a far more experienced veteran at being constantly hurt so Rocco has plenty of catching up to do. :-b

I'm not sure exactly how such a serious condition can be so funny to some...

But hey, some people think Dane Cook is funny too. :-P

Yeah I'm in the same boat. In my defense it's a 15 team mixed league that uses 5 OF + UT. However, I should have known better. :-[

Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

Oh Dane Cook. The guy is funny like spastic colon.

It's too bad for Rocco. I would have really liked to see what he could have done with a full healthy season.

This is a raw deal for Rocco. If DR is right and this costs him his career, thats terrible. Maybe a bigger concern though is his quality of life. I've heard of people who have chronic fatigue for a variety of reasons, and getting off the couch is hard. Good luck to him.
