I'm in a weekly league, and I started him for 2 weeks when Soriano when down. All of his 0 for 4s were killing me, although I believe I won steals both weeks. I would have probably kept him if I had any room in my lineup. Now that Soriano is back, I traded him away for pitching help(Weaver).
Well, I don't know about "valuable" ... Bourn probably either went undrafted or was drafted in the last few rounds in most leagues. But he's definitely "useful"; as I said above, he's worth 5 1/2 more points so far this year to me than Matt Kemp would be, and people would consider Kemp to have value.
Really, SBs are a weird stat. On the one hand, they're pretty uncorrelated to most of the other things that get counted (HRs, RBIs, AVG) but on the other hand, there really isn't any other category that can be delivered to you by one player. Without crunching the numbers, I would hazard a guess that a guy would have to hit about .550 to have the equivalent 8-pt increase in team batting average since those get blended across everyone. Runs there isn't enough variance in; RBIs not really; HRs maybe if someone goes completely nuts and hits close to 60 or so they move you up a few places on their own. But there really isn't a comparable.
So I would say I wouldn't have someone who only contributed to steals, but I would have someone who delivered the steals category for me, even if that's all they did.
And if Bourn can get back to what he did in April, that's exactly who he is.

Bourn was a free agent in my league so I wouldn't call that paying for steals. I rarely start him only on certain occasions, I would never start him against a lefty.

He was drafted in my 10, 12 and 20 team private leagues so yeah, people definitely paid for his steals.

Sorry, I meant I didn't overpay for steals. I don't overpay for saves either, I picked up Rauch and Ryan in my 10 team league. I agree, you shouldn't overpay for steals.
