Michael Bourn: An Elite Source of Speed?

Postby Doughhead » Tue Mar 11, 2008 1:09 pm

Does Bourn project to be an elite speed guy this year now that it looks like he'll have a full-time job in Houston? Also, with all those boppers behind him, he could be looking at scoring some serious runs. Is it reasonable to be ranking him ahead of other speed demons like Juan Pierre at this point?

I've got Bourn down for around 40 SB but he has no power and will be lucky to hit .280. I don't think he gets on base enough to score more than 100 runs either. I think there are better ways to get SB.

I personally like him, I have no problem taking him late.

His first full season should be an exciting one,

Is Joey Gathright worth a look for late round SBs?

Bourn is fine for as late as you can get him in drafts.....just don't expect a whole lot other than those SB.

As for Gathright....Hillman loves the guy....he won't provide much of anything either other than the potential 15-20 SB he could give you this year in limited time.

Personally, i'd give Bourn a shot with my last pick or two of the draft....I woudldn't draft Gathright, but would keep an eye on his situation.

I would rather have Willy T over Bourn. They are quite similar and will be drafted around the same time, but you know Taveras will score a ton of runs if he stays healthy, and he'll probably hit for a 20+ point higher average.

my thinking as well.

Another thing to note on Taveras: he hit just about as many doubles in a little more than 1/2 a season's worth of games/AB's in Colorado as he did in full seasons in Houston. Not saying that will lead to more homers (though it could lead to a few) but for leagues that count OPS Taveras may not hurt you as much.

I think Bourn will steal 50. James has him projected at 58, 26 more than he has Taveras pegged for. Taveras will give you .020 or so more points in Average, and the other three categories are near-washes or toss ups on the two.

i think it depends on his playing time and spot in the lineup. if bourn leads off and plays mostly everyday, theres no doubt in my mind that he'll steal 50 bags. but if they hit him 7th or 8th so awhile, take him out 2-3 times a week then i think we need to lower our expectations a tad.
