Beckett does not want to go to Japan, he's made that pretty clear. The Sox will let him stay back and then he'll go on to Win in Oakland giving up just 1 run in 7 innings.

Agree, Beckett has been quite vocal about not wanting to go to Japan. While he of course could be battling an injury, he just as easily could be trying to get out of the long trip - any sort of skeletal issue has been ruled out by MRI, so by default it is muscular, and for all we know he's faking it :-)

I agree with this logic, and its actually the best thing for him physically & mentally to be ready to start when the team gets back from japan. Don't push the panic button. It's muscular, its not structural, he's young enough where he'll be fine with the medical staff available to him and a few days off.

I wonder how serious this is, because Beckett himself is amazingly pessimistic about his injury. I've never actually heard any other athlete complain so much about something; they usually go out of their way to talk about how they are feeling better, even when they're not. I'm not sure if Beckett just started believing in complete honesty, or if this injury is more serious than simply a tweaked muscle. I feel like back spasms have taken down the production of other (albeit older) players for entire seasons.
