Lessons. Go to a credible guitar store and start chatting up one of the guys. They'll hook you up with a guitar, probably under $200 and set you up with some lessons depending on what you're interested in learning.

+1, you are better off to get a guitar by itself than one in a 'starter kit' I'd think b/c you have some choice in the matter. I think that there are great guitars in the MIM Fenders and other bargain type of instruments but you have to play around with them. A lot of really inexpensive guitars can have issues w/ tuning that will be extremely bothersome to learn on. If you are acquainted with someone who plays, I would suggest bringing them along, to at least feel it out or give you a hand.
