How much would it take to get Fuentes back Closing for COLO?

Postby kemper5 » Mon Mar 03, 2008 11:03 pm

It still baffles me Colo made a move so quick to put young Manny Corpas into the closers roll and never look back.. Was it Fuentes 31 SV/ 2.91 ERA/91 K 2005 they did not like? Was it the 30 Sv/73 K/ 1.16 Whip 2006 that made them turn? Was it the All Star Selection in 07? It could not be the few blown saves? It's crazy to think a few games and he lost his roll completely..Then Colorado goes crazy and signs Corpas to a mega deal quick..What will it take to get Fuentes back Closing? 2-3 Corpas Blown Saves in a row? See them reverse rolls?

Probably because Fuentes had that like AWFUL stretch where he just bombed games for Colorado.

Then they slid Corpas in, he was dynamite, and Fuentes was pretty good as SU guy. Don't fix what isn't broken was probably Colorado's mentality.

I've seen a lot of Corpas over the past two seasons. He's the real deal. Unless he goes through a stretch like Fuentes did last summer, it's doubtful that Hurdle replaces him.

As a Corpas owner, I do worry about the possibility.

it's R-O-L-E..and it probably had a lot to do w/the timing last year...fuentes had blown 4 in a row and when corpas was given the job "temporarly", he was lights out...and as the pennant loomed, the rox played the hot hand and corpas was outstanding...his continued success in the playoffs showed that he could be a big game closer...if the rockies had been mired in 4th or 5th place, there is a good chance that fuentes would have reclaimed his role

Fuentes is a lefty, much easier to lose the job as a lefty. He got hurt, Corpas filled in well and the rest is history.

Corpas was utterly lights-out last year from the second he assumed the closers role. He is the closer and will have a fairly long leash. Draft him in the second tier of closers (right after the elite) with confidence. Fuentes' role as a closer might be for another team.

The new contract Corpas signed seems to guarantee a longer leash than he might normally have. Barring injury, I'd be surprised to see Fuentes get his closer job back.

I like Fuentes' chances of getting traded mid-season and take over as the closer there.
