unless he was running out of fuel and couldnt make it to another airport, trying to land in wind like that is probably not the best move

That was my first thought when I saw this, too. Crazy to even try. Couldn't the tower have told him about the winds? And with winds that strong, you'd have to think any kind of wind shear would slam that plane into the ground so fast they'd be seeing worms before they knew what was what.
