Educating With Fantasy Sports

Postby redwings122 » Wed Feb 27, 2008 3:01 pm

I have created fantasy football math for my class, which we do every Tuesday. The whole class has one team and we graph every fantasy stat and compare each player week to week up until playoffs. This has helped students that hate math get involved and see how stats are used in the real world perspective. It's been fun! Now i'm trying to create something similar using fantasy baseball.

That's awesome. I would fail the class on purpose to take it again the next year if I had a teacher that did that. :-D ;-D

baseball should be far more useful since it is so much more stat-driven that football. you can get into things like regression, standard deviation, etc.

What was great is that a few of them even went back home and created their own teams. They are regulars! This is 7-8th grade by the way ;-D

I actually use fantasy sports to teach my Business Math students about the stock market, as well. Instead of a portfolio, they have a team; it can be football, baseball, I even let the girls have 'celebrity teams'. Then we track them over the course of time I set up, they use the datesof the time table I set to make decisions on holding, selling, etc. Then we transition into the market itself. It's a nice way to ease into things, the kids get a kick out of it, and they actually get the point of what I'm trying to get across. It's good stuff. ;-D

Celebrity teams? Is that game similar to the Fantasy celeb chick game thread we had on GT some time ago? :-b

in one of my education classes last semester i used fantasy sports as a way to help teach stats and also to show how to use excel. In high school we had to do a big stat project and i did one using all baseball stats it was a blast. When i start to teach i think this is a tactic i might use.
College Tuition: $12,000
Room & Board: $5,600
Books: $500
Food Plan: $2000
Not going to college and living with your parents: Priceless

As a matter of fact, it is. The only catch is, they have to present me the entire terms of the scoring, and get my aproval. One girl uses three sites to track her celebs... perezhilton, thesuperficial, and one other, and has classifications for negative and positive points -- it was very original and well put together, so I let her roll with it, and as a result, she understands the whole thing better, IMO.
