I'm sure if you read Moneyball, you remember this guy

Athletics announced the retirement of catcher Jeremy Brown.
Surprising. Brown, the famous "fat catcher" from Moneyball, still had a slight chance of carving out a major league career as a part-time player and, at worst, was sure to draw a pretty good Triple-A salary for several more years. The 28-year-old hit .276/.364/.469 for Sacramento last season. In his only major league action, he went 3-for-10 with two doubles in 2006.

seriously though, its not that surprising to see a career minor leaguer give up their dream. happens more than not, but beane's players are just scrutinized more than most.
