At bats projections

Postby sudboy » Fri Feb 15, 2008 10:33 am

I would first like to thank everyone involved in creating and managing this site, I will be sure to tell all my freinds about it.
What is a good rule for determining how many at bats you think your players will get in the upcoming season. When determining my team I just took an average of the top 15 players at their position and came up with a number, but I know its not too accurate. When calculating my projections should I assume everyplayer regardless of roster will have the same amount of at bats?

Thanks for your answers.

ABs are difficult to get a real accurate projection on. For younger players or injury prone players you have to make a guess at playing time, you have to look at the spot in the lineup the player will probably hit in, how good the offense is around him, etc. If the player is fairly established (a couple full years in the majors) and there hasn't been any major change to his role on the team then using an average of their ABs over the last few years would work.

Baseball Prospectus has great AB projections. You can use there AB projections as a base and then change a few if you think someone will have a bigger role, will get hurt, etc. and BP didn't put it in. You can then use that to compile your projections. Its not free though :,-( .
