Pointless for Minnesota but given that it's only one year for $5 million, are teams shying away from innings eaters? I figured that he could get something better than 1 year.

What a ridiculous idea from Minnesota.
Looks like their new GM is going into the Sabean/Colletti/Krivsky group. Over his last two transactions he is 0/2.
Have you seen how badly Livan is declining? http://thebaseballcube.com/players/H/Livan-Hernandez.shtml
BRILLIANT gamble from Arizona to offer him arbitration. They get pick 43 or 44 for their troubles.

Livan will be a nice replacement for the "Twelve Million Dollar Man" that is Carlos Silva -- not Santana (which ESPN made it seem... that gig goes to Liriano). But anyway, I think it was a signing the Twins needed to make. He was widely considered to be the 3rd best remaining SP on the Free Agent market outside of Lohse and Colon -- neither of which the Twins had any interest in obtaining (Lohse: Team history, Colon: Contract demands). He'll be a good SP4 behind Liriano, Bonsor, and Baker.

I just don't get it. The Twins have a littany of 4th and 5th starters on their roster, all of whom are younger and cheaper and desperately need MLB experience. Rather than give them a shot, we sign another declining veteran who can block their paths. At least Livan will chew up innings and save the arms of our bullpen, but that's about the only positive thing I can say. I've come to expect this type of move from the Twins, and their reliance on veterans who are going to take them nowhere would be my one scathing criticism of Twins management.

They could just be signing him in the hopes of dealing him around the break for some low level prospect to a contender that suffered an injury and needs an innings eater at the back of their rotation. Teams would probably take him for a stretch run.

I still can't believe he's only 32. He pitches like he's 42. !+)

Sure, he'll eat innings, but they won't be very good ones. The AL Central is going to eat him alive.

He's been ground down so much from workload will anyone want him? Only so many teams are stupid enough to think 1.40 - 1.60 WHIP is a good idea.
