Personally I'd take the defensive sacrifice and take Jeter/A-Rod over Renteria/Rolen. I think its fair to argue that a position player has more impact on how his team performs when he's at the plate, rather than in the field. Case in point- look at the Win Shares stats from last year- two guys at the top are Pujols and Bonds.
Anyway the few times where a Jeter error could cost the team a game, he and A-Rod provide the offense to negate the error. To ask a question, how many games can a better defensive shortstop (Renteria) win you over Jeter, strictly defensively speaking? I'd say maybe 1-3, while the Yankee left side will win more games offensively to offset the couple defensive victories for the Cards. In the end the NYY duo will win you more games than the StL and isn't that the whole point of baseball?
I'm rambling so I'll quit
