Why take Albert in the 1st Round?

Postby Nails86 » Mon Feb 04, 2008 1:06 am

Obviously, when Fat Albert is healthy he is #1 or #2, but with the health risk, why even bother taking him in the first round pick? Why not go with someone who will put up similar #'s but with less risk? I would go with any one of these players before Fatty. The reward does not outweigh the risk!
1. A-rod
2. HanRam
3. Reyes
4. McCab
5.Wright
6. Santana
7.Utley
8.Holliday
9.Feilder
10.Howard
There is simply too much risk in taking Albert when all of these players can give similar protection with less risk. Albert can not even bend his elbow and has stated that he will not play through the same pain this year, especially if the Cards are out of it towards the end as they most likely will be. (which raises the point that his surrounding cast is awful once again) What do you buddies think?

I completely agree and will not be picking him first round unless it's after those guys, esspecially since he plays 1B.

I would guess because players say things all the time, much of which never comes true. It just depends on how much credence you give his statement. Was he just trying to justify what was a sub-par season by his lofty standards? Did he just want some attention with so much of the media focused on other things and players this offseason? No one but Albert really knows.

Personally, I weight the risk high enough that I probably won't take him in the first round. But I think that's an individual call and you can't take his quote as fact.

I agree that Albert's condition makes him nearly undraftable. If you could get him outside the first round, he'd be great value. However, someone will take him in the first round, which, as you stated, puts the risk on a higher level than the reward.

Risk? His WORST season of his career was 99-32-103-2-327. I call that the definition of a sure-thing. Think A-Rod circa Spring 2007.

Here's the risk:

1. He can't straighten his arm anymore.
2. He says he won't play through pain this year.
3. The team he's on will most likely be out of contention early.
4. The surgery will put him out of commission for a long time.

Albert playing... There's no risk in the stats. The risk is whether or not Albert will play.

Do you want that risk associated with a first round draft pick?

i actualy preffer filling out either 3B or SS myself in the 1st because you have a good chance at getting either fielder or howard in the 2nd of some drafts.

i do not like what i hear on alberts elbow, nor do i like that line-up.

If this was all just based on something he said, I don't think we'd be discussing moving him out of the 1st round. This is based on him having his worst year, him, his coach and a trainer discussing his elbow injury and both him and his coach saying he wouldn't play through injury this year.

It sounds awful, but I agree that as a first rounder (someone that has to carry your team) he has too much risk for me. Again my thoughts are that first rounders never win you a league, but they can definitely lose you one.

I don't think I've seen either of those guys fall past Pick 15 or so in any mock or draft I've seen this season; and they are almost always both taken in Round 1.

One of Fielder, Howard or Ortiz generally drops to the middle of the 2nd round and then after those guys there are a lot of OF's going so I kind of agree that I like the idea of 2B, SS or 3B in the first round.

I'd certainly draft Pujols if he fell far enough but he isn't in my top 5 right now, a healthy spring training could move him back into it though.
