I'd be ok with a 40 SB projection assuming the increased opportunities will hold off any regression.

I'm really more interested in the Betancourt comments since he is a boredline viable MI and even 5 or 6 more SB could push him into a little bit of a sleeper in deeper leagues.

Pigs will be seen flying around the Space Needle, before this happens. Johns trying to build fan enthusiasm, or he's got a serious drinking problem.

Raines, Henderson, Coleman never stole 80 bags after age 29. Brock did once. Ichiro is 34, and hasn't stolen 50 since he was 27. 40 is possible, but i don't foresee much more.

SB's are a stat based on opportunity. Ichiro is on base 250+ times a year and if his manager wants him to run he'll get plenty of steals. I doubt he'll get 80, actually I don't think there is a chance he'll get 80. But he was 45 for 47 in 2006, so I don't think 50-60 SB's aren't unrealistic.

Maybe. Age is the biggest factor here imo. Raines and Coleman never stole 50 bases at at 34. Brock did 4 times, Henderson twice.

Somehow I can't picture Ichiro, who's as efficient and as trusty as a '96 Toyota Camry, being turned into a "McLaren" F1.

I can see Ichiro topping out at 40 SB, but 80 is a crazy goal even for a guy as good as Ichiro.

The significant part of that is that Brock and Henderson were still getting on base 200+ times when stealing 50+ bases. When that changed or their success rate declined, their SB totals dropped. Raines and Coleman only had a handful of seasons over 150+ times on base after 34. Ichiro has been on-base 250-300 times recently and until that changes he has plenty of opportunities to run. And he is maintaining a reasonable success rate. Again this is all at the whim of the manager sending him.
