Baseball Prospectus 2008

Postby KoopaTroopa211 » Fri Jan 25, 2008 8:44 pm

For the past 4 years I've traditionally kicked off the season by grabbing Any Old Fantasy Baseball Magazine off the shelf, browsing it, marking a few players, etc.

This year, I was considering buying a copy of Baseball Prospectus 2008, but it costs about twice as much as the mag. What do I get for my money, and how worth it is it?

It's totally worth it. It's a reference for me all season when guys get called up and magazines don't even come close to the write-ups given to every player you need for the most part. Plus, it's fun to read as a baseball fan even without the fantasy implications. You're paying twice the price but getting far more than twice the quality. A lot of people say get a subscription to the website instead, but if I had to make a choice because I was tight on money I'd get the book for the quick reference. But, the website is quality as well especially the Player Forecast Manager (which should be updated year round, but unfortunately is only updated frequently in the preseason).

Is Baseball Prospectus a magazine? I've been meaning to subscribe to Baseball America, but I can't find it anywhere in Omaha. :-C

If you just get the book.

From everything I've heard Shandler is better for online content. Don't expect much other than preseason adjustments to PECOTA based on expected at-bats and some articles throughout the season which aren't even written by the BP guys. Shandler's site gives you season long fantasy coverage from what people have said here.

Absolutely worth twice the price of a mag rag.

One of the few sites or publications which develop their player projections using well researched means.

I've never purchased the book but I love the site though as others have mentioned it is not a fantasy based site. I also have no clue if you get the updated projections online after buying the book because the book projections are not as finalized as the sites.
