Mets Lead Santana Derby

Postby bigh0rt » Wed Jan 23, 2008 6:07 pm

Once written off as an extreme long shot in the long-running Johan Santana drama, the Mets may actually be the favorite now. At the very least, there are indications now that they are engaging in more regular dialogue with the Twins in recent days than either the Red Sox or Yankees. And Mets general manager Omar Minaya, who loves a big deal but hasn’t made one since the winter before last, has told some people in the business, “We have a shot.’’

Minaya declined to comment when I reached him on Tuesday. But there are some definite signs that the Twins may be warming to the idea of taking a package of projects and prospects with high ceilings while not insisting on much in the way of major-league help. Which, if true, would give the Mets a real shot. | FULL STORY

We REALLY need to get Santana far more than the Yanks and Sox. The Yankees have two potential aces in their rotation with Joba and Hughes and Boston would just be greedy if they decided to add Santana to their rotation. 8-o

Ollie could be an ace if he could ever learn how to work through trouble rather than usually letting bad situations turn ugly.

The Mets can make it out of the NL without a true Ace but we're not going to beat any of the 5 giants in the American League (Sox, Yanks, Tigers, Indians, Angels) without a true ace because they either have far superior pitching staffs like the Sox, Indians, and Angels or even better offenses in Detroit and the Yankees.

It would be tough to bite the 6 year bullet if we did get him.
