Don't forget that Orlando Merced is back in Pittsburgh! Woo hoo! Bringing back a relic from their long-ago glory years.
Roger Angell: I was talking with Bob Gibson and I said: 'Are you always this competitive?' He said: 'Oh, I think so. I got a three-year old daughter, and I've played about 500 games of tic-tac-toe with her and she hasn't beat me yet.'
OF bench) Ward, Wilson,..
IF Bench) Cota/Wilson/Nunez/Mackowiak ..
is my best guess at how Pitt breaks camp . HMM Craig will get 350 ABs max, barring injury. Looking at it on paper, this team has no hope in real baseball but for fantasy, the outfielders should provide good value in NL only and some mixed leagues IMO. and Jason Kendall will obviouslly get drafted, but you won't catch me going after Stynes or the winner of that 2nd base battle anytime soon in any of my leagues. I'd even steer clear of the entire staff in my opinion .. .. .. .. especially Mesa!!
you want to talk about some old school buco's...here we go (i'm from the burgh' that's why i know some of these horrible players):
jose "chico" lind
mike levalier (a.k.a "spanky")
jim morrison (he wasn't the lead singer of the doors)
oh ya, don't forget that the buco's signed rick reed to a minor league deal...and you thought that the yankee's getting arod was big.
"Making Sports Humor a Possibility"
Hey now, some of those guys had a useful year or two. Gott had 34 saves one year. Lind was able to jump over Joe Garagiola's head, I remember (and played a good secondbase up until October 14, 1992 in the 9th inning when the Braves came back to beat the Bucs in Game 7 of the NLCS). Even the utterly forgettable John Wehner hit .340 when he came up in 1991. Being a Pittsburgh native, that afforded him instant favored-son status. Then he hit .179 the next year.
And don't forget Doug Frobel (.283/.328/.533 in 60 at-bats in 1983). I was playing APBA baseball back then and gave Frobel a whole season of play instead of just the 60 at-bats the Bucs' manager gave him. Great numbers. I was a genius.
Same stuff as last year - to quote the line from Major League:
"Not bad for a couple of has-beens and never-will-be's"
I don't mind Mondesi as long as he contributes; sadly even if he does we'll have a Lofton situation as the Cubs or Astros try to fill in a superstar injury for their playoff pushes. Pirates get yet another useless prospect in return.
Mad, as to your Redman comment, you might have something. We'll have to see. I'd love it if Tike has finally turned the corner and can keep up the pace that he had at the end of last year. If he can get on base consistently, Kendall/Wilson/whoever can get some better numbers for RBI's, plus you fantasy types could have a huge sleeper outfielder who can put up some nice numbers.
Wilson's role is pretty well defined now - platoon with Simon and Mondesi and catch about 20 games. He may also play in right if Bay is still injured. He should get 400 AB's this year.
