Can anyone please give me an update on Joel Zumaya, is he still expected to return in June sometime,
how will Detroit use him, does he still project to be in the closer role, if not this year then next

At this point it is too soon to tell. The most optimistic team reports are that Zumaya won't be back until after the all-star break. But a lot could happen between now and then.

Any updated information out there on Zumaya? I know Leyland said "sooner than people thought" but I haven't heard anything in like a month. He's out there on the wire and I'm trying to figure out how long I can let him go before picking him up.

Also what's the recovery time normally for his surgery? It wasn't TJ was it?

It really depends on the league you are in, but in a standard league he should not be owned at this point. He is still a long way off from returning. Saying he will return in June is highly optimistic. It is not likely that he will be looked upon to close this yr when he does return.

As for his injury and surgery, it was not TJ surgery - it was an AC joint reconstruction. It was done late last October. This type of surgery is major and I understand that no one has ever had it done and returned to play baseball again - if I am wrong, please correct me.

On a positive note, he did resume playing catch about a month ago.

Personally, I would be suprised to see him in a game before August and I have my fingers crossed that he isnt completely done - a very real possibility considering the type of pitcher he is an the injury he sustained.

After slogging through much of last season on the DL, the notion of stashing away Zumaya for the promise of late season HLDs is pretty weak, imo.
