thoughts on those 2 deals for prospects?

cap at 95 mil for each team, in the () are FA years of the player, 2008 means they expire after the 2008 season. In order to retain guys after they expire, you either pay them around market price(good SP=15-20mil a year for 3-5 years) or you franchise him for 11mil and 2 years. I'm the A's(read: I'm cheap)

Kind of doing what the real A's are doing here. Except not as drastic. I did went to the WS last year and lead the AL in regular season play. I figure I need to save some bullet just in case I'm good again this year. So this is not a complete rebuild. Just some retooling.

I think Parra, if healthy, can fill in Bonderman's shoe at least decently. Hopefully he'll outperform Bonderman's number last year, but then again, I dropped Bonderman from my MLB roster for that last horrible stretch so his value was probably a 4.2ERA for me. Gindl looks promising but is far away. Farris is just a generic middle infield prospect.

Deal 2, I have an of of Rios, Holliday, Ethier and Swisher already. I think at least 3 of them will work out and hopefully the 4th and Chris Shelton and Ryan Shealy(I have Ortiz starting at 1B) will fill in the Util role fine. Plus I got Michael Bourn in the minors that could contribute soon. So I'm dealing from depth here. Now Cust's power production might not be replaced, but I do get a good spec out of Smoker and I could use some RP help sometime soon in Adam Carr.

Deal 1 - I like it cause I'm down on Bonderman right now since ended the season with right elbow strain. And to me that puts a red flag up on him (to me at least). Of course Parra has spent his fair share of time injured. But if you don't think that you can sign Bonderman after 2008 then getting Parra and 2 others out of the deal works out IMO. But bonderman will likely outperform Parra this year by a decent amount as long as he doesn't get injured.

Deal 2 - I also like since it's a good sell high on Cust and you have depth. Ethier and Bourn as backups should be solid. IMO I don't see alot of upside beyond his 2007 numbers from Cust. He's a good AAAA slugger that I don't think will hold a full-time starting job. He's good when he plays, but you're getting solid prospects in return. Smoker has upside, but as you say could take some time.

If you think you have enough depth to withstand the loss of the veterans this year then both trades work out. Just my 2 cents.
