Help with 15 minor league keepers

Postby speedy27 » Thu Dec 27, 2007 6:49 pm

I've currently got a stockpile of minor league eligible players (400ab, 100/200 IP). I've got to start making some decisions on who goes (trade/draft) and who gets kept. We start 5SP and 5RP on our major league roster. I usually stash a few RP who might close or who'll rack up on holds. Please let me know my best overall 15.

thanks for the help so far. keeper list due date is coming soon so I've got to try and narrow it down a little more.

I'd really like to keep

JR Towles
Evan Longoria
Beau Mills
Michael Moustakas
Reid Brignac
Chin-Lung Hu
Jay Bruce
Josh Hamilton
Ross Detwiler
Mike Pelfrey
Joba Chamberlain
Matt Garza

Which of these below 3 would best round out my above list. Looking for overall potential rather than position? Is there someone on the above list that should be bumped in favor of someone else below?

Adrian Cardenas, Erick Aybar, Austin Jackson, Michael Main, Felipe Paulino, Tyler Robertson, Greg Smith, Edwardo Morlan and Brian Wilson

Thanks for any and all help! ;-D

I'd definitely keep Jackson and Robertson. Aybar, Wilson, and Paulino aren't likely to become major impact guys, Main and Cardenas are years away, and never heard of Greg Smith. I don't know much about Morlan but the numbers look pretty good so he's probably the best option for the third spot.

I like Jackson and Robertson in that group although I'm waiting to see if they can repeat last season at a higher level. Morlan potentially could become a very good closer, but he'll likely be a setup guy for a couple of years (unless he gets the closer role by default, it is TB). Wilson is tempting just because he might be the closer in SF (even on bad teams, closers are valuable). Main and Cardenas could be nice if you can wait, but I'm not real familiar with either of them.

I'm also not as high on Chin-Lung Hu. He had a nice offensive season last year, but I've still heard that he's a defense first SS that won't steal alot of bases.

If you want pure projection, then it is easily:

Jackson
Cardenas
Main

Robertson projects to be a 4th, MAYBE 3rd starter, as more advanced hitters can lay off his slider, and there are already hints he might be bullpen bound. Main projects as a 2nd starter, is one of the most athletic pitchers in the low minors and has a plus power curve to go with a 96 mph fastball with action. Frankly, there really is no comparison between the two, and you can bet that Main has a brighter future than Robertson in nearly every metric except perhaps control.

I would definitely take Jackson over Hu. Everything else looks good.
