Aside from being a massive injury risk, what do people think about this guy. I had him a couple of years back, when he had solid power, good average, and even stole some bases.
His whole career has been a series of injuries. Until he proves otherwise, assume he will be spending at least half the season on the bench/DL and draft accordingly.
I think it says a lot that the Nationals signed Dimitri Young to a contract to play 1B and then moved their #1 prospect to 1B (though that might have something to do with the amount of stud OF they have but little else). I like Johnson but I'm not sure bout him at all.
I love Nick Johnson as a player. A career .395 OBP is sweet, especially with a career .272 batting average. He also plays a very reliable-to-good defense at first base.
However, as others have said, he just can't stay on the field and generally isn't worth the gamble. In OBP leagues though (such as the one I play in), I think he might be worth a shot. Not saying he'd be someone I'd count on to start, but I'd definitely look at him as a backup and cross my fingers that he can replicate 2006 (500 AB, .290/.428/.520 with 23 HR, 100 R, 10 SB, 77 RBI).
I have Nick Johnson in both my dynasty leagues , and am not hoping for a whole lot in 2008. If his hip problem appears to be serious , I'll probably dump him to waivers. It's a shame because he was a H2H star in 2006 , very consistent.
