Rowand is so wildly inconsistent why would you lock him up for 5 years?
Oh that's right.
There's only one mind diabolical enough to hatch a contract like this.

Well I'm glad the Yankees won't be tempted to sign him now.
Sabean = Idiot.

Haha, wow. Well I guess this means they won't be needing Rios, although who knows with Sabean.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3152201It's definitely a lot of money, but I seem to be saying that with every free agent signing now. The guy had a very good last year and 2004, so who knows?

Horrible. My guess is they have a AAAA guy in the minors who could nearly replicate Rowand's numbers in 2008, and for the league minimum at that.
The worst part is the timing. In a rebuilding phase?

If the choice was sign Rowand as a FA or trade away Tim Lincecum for Alex Rios, I sign Aaron Rowand 10 times out of 10. Not because Rowand is better than Rios, but because Rios is not a Tim Lincecum better than Rios. In other words Tim Lincecum and Rowand trumps Rios. This is actually a good move by the Giants. Now the Giants still need some bats, maybe the bat fairy drops one or two off?

why not just save the money instead of spending it now and tying yourself up to a mediocre player.
Absolutely saving the money and spending it on a better player at some point makes more sense, but I think the choice was Rowand who they knew they were and overpaying and Lincecum OR no Lincecum and Rios. Looking at it that way signing Rowand makes sense. Dealing away Lincecum would have been a worse move than overpaying Rowand. But I agree the Giants should have maybe spent the money next off-season. Though with the Giants rotation they could surprise.
The Cow
Sometimes the best move is no move at all. This is one of those cases. They need to take a page out of the Marlins book but they can't properly because their entire offense is on borderline social security. I can't think of a FA signing that has worked out for the future of the Giants in recent memory.
