Could it be he hit so well because pitchers didn't realize he was that good of a hitter? Once he starts playing 1B I'd think he'd see harder to hit pitches.

121 MLB and Minor League Ab's don't mean much (not saying he's not a good hitter but thats 1/4 of a season total and 1/8th of a season if we just count pro ABs)

So you don't want to use college numbers nor MiLB nor MLB where he hit very well. What would you suggest we go by? His Little League stats?

I know, I know. Still, he comps pretty well with Ryan Braun's college numbers:
.364/.435/.665 (1.100 OPS) with 17 HR in 242 ABs as a 19 yo College kid .335/.439/.606 (1.045 OPS) with 10 HR in 155 AB as a 20 yo collegian .388/.471/.726 (1.197 OPS) with 18 HR in 219 AB as a 21 yo collegian

True. Even Tim Hudson hit pretty well when he was playing at Auburn. .396/.430/.670 (1.100 OPS) with 18 HR/95 RBI in 273 ABs at the age of 21.

Owings first year was pretty average, his best year came in Conference USA ... not exactly a powerhouse conference. The Big East where Braun played, by comparison is quite a bit better. You can't just compare numbers like nothing else matters, especially in college. For example Rickie Weeks hit .500/.619/.987 in his last year in college, then again he played at Southern so it needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

Yeah. I probably shouldn't have done that. While I know a little about the minors and park/league effects, I admit I know absolutely nothing about college park/league effects. (effect or affect? I looked it up and I still can't figure it out. Whatever.)
